後悔 - REGRET

When working on a shoot often times we think about the shoot itself. Thinking about the client’s needs what is the best way to make them comfortable how to maximize time and what will give the greatest results. I can honestly say I have no regrets when it came to this shoot on the photo side, which is what I was hired to do. But looking back I always have this feeling of regret about not doing a video interview with Kazuki about his trade.

Renting a studio and setting up everything was nothing new but since Kazuki, a Nihonbuyou (Japanese traditional dance / performer) loved my work and traveled by car over 2 hours to make the shoot happen I had time on my mind. I had one assistant and we had 3 looks to do and not a lot of time. I had planned for the usual set up, clean up, and extra time for any mishaps but didn’t really think to set 30 to 45 min for an interview about this uncharted territory that I was exploring.

I’ve had a love of different things related to Japan’s varied culture from temples and shrines all the way to food subcultures like Japaense ramen. But this was one thing that I’d seen but heard or knew little about. I wish I had asked more questions, found out why the men dressed as women in the plays… asked if it was a traditional thing inspired by 歌舞伎 (kabuki) since in those plays men play the rolls of women as well. Asked if there was a shift in the future generations that embraced women playing parts as men similarly to 宝塚 (takarazuka). Theater and performances in Japan are taken so seriously, as they should be. Looking back on things I did learn not to only think of getting the project done, but to also try to learn more about not only the performers of traditional arts but also the culture associated along with it.

日本舞踊や宝塚や歌舞伎などの違いと彼の意見を聞きたかった。宝塚は全員女性という事を知ってるけど、演劇の文化に色々話したかった。

I guess now I have a promise to keep to you the reader and myself. When life gives you an opportunity to experience something different and learn about a new culture, lifestyle, group of people and so on… ask questions to learn more and see what draws people in to it. There may just be something in there for you as well.
